MALARIA, the silent killerA simple guide for travellers
What is malaria?
Malaria is a very serious disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium. Four species of the parasites produce the disease which is transmitted by the female anopheline mosquito. The most dangerous is P. falciparum. If untreated it can lead to fatal cerebral malaria.
What are the symptoms?
Flu-like symptoms: headaches, muscle aches, confusion, dizziness, vomiting (lasting several hours), sweating, tiredness, but most of all, fever. Anemia and jaundice can occur.
Symptoms generally occur from 7 days to a few weeks after being bitten, however may not occur for up to one year.
How is it prevented?
The following drugs should be taken before embarking on a trip to a country where malaria is prevalent:
Atovaquoneproguanil
Doxycycline
Mefloquine
Primaquine (in special circumstances)
Visit your doctor or health clinic several weeks before travelling as these drugs need to be administered in advance.
A good insect repellent should also be applied to exposed skin whilst abroad; preferably one containing DEET (N.N – diethyl meta-toulamide) which is the only ingredient guaranteed to work and is long lasting. There are other repellents on the market for those not wishing to use DEET, but they need to be applied frequently.
What countries are at risk?
Afghanistan. Angola, Brazil, Benin, Burkino, Cambodia, Camaroon, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial New Guinea, Eritrea, Faso Burindi, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Bissau, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Principe, Rwanda, Sao Tome, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Uganda, Vietnam, Zaire, Zambia.

Magazines In The Dental Office
You know that when you go to the dentist for your appointment to have work done on your teeth, you are more than a little apprehensive. It is intimidating for most people to go to the dentist as they anticipate much pain once they are sitting in his chair. The dental assistant that is beside the dentist and aiding him during your treatment is usually the one who is responsible for putting the magazines out in the waiting room for patients to peruse before they go to the chair. It helps if the magazine can help to keep the patient’s mind off the procedures to come.
Dental assistants realize that a good magazine can help alleviate the fears of the patient while they are waiting to be seen by the doctor. They usually make choices such as Time Magazine, Field and Stream, and Reader’s Digest. These types of magazines include informative articles that can take the reader to another place, and help them to forget the reason why they are reading it in the first place. Most dentists bring in magazines from home and it offers the patient a bit of a glimpse into the type of person that is working on their teeth, really is. Not only do the patients get to find out a little bit more about their dentist, but the dentist and the staff get to know the kind of person you are by what you do with those magazines.
A dentist can use the magazines in his office as a gauge as to what kind of person he is dealing with. A person that reads finance or computer magazines gives the dentist a fair idea of how that person will feel if he has to raise his rates. A person that steals the magazines from an office is a good moral compass too. Some dentists will bill their patients for magazines they may have removed from the office.
Some dentists as well as doctors include magazines such as National Geographic, in order to give their patients something to think about other than the procedure they are facing. The patient becomes quickly involved with the beautiful photography that National Geographic is known for, and will often find engaging articles, that when their name is called, become startled upon hearing their name. This is a good sign that the magazines that the assistants and the rest of the staff have chosen are the perfect publication to be displayed in the office.
The magazines that are displayed can tell you where your dentist is in his financial life too. If he has magazines that are dedicated to boating and yachts, you can be sure that he is enjoying a healthy practice and making lots of money. The same can be said for dentists who have golfing magazines in their offices. Golf is not an inexpensive sport, and anyone involved enough has to be making a good living in order to enjoy golf properly. Green fees and club memberships don’t come cheap these days.

Lasik Eye Surgery Complications
What are some of the possible complications of Lasik eye surgery?
Undercorrection this occurs when the expected vision correction falls short of the desired outcome. This occurs more commonly with patients who have a high degree of nearsightedness (only objects close up are clear), farsightedness (only objects far away are clear) or astigmatism (images both far and near are distorted). Why? There is more laser corneal sculpting that needs to occur with patients having higher degrees of vision imperfection. When choosing your Lasik eye surgeon, its important to ask them what percentage of their patients need retreatment for undercorrection. This should be something that they are willing to freely discuss with you. If not, walk away! This is not to be confused with a planned slight undercorrection for nearsighted patients over forty years old which aids their reading vision. But this is something that you and your Lasik eye surgeon would have discussed before your surgery.
Overcorrection this complication occurs less frequently than undercorrection and results when the amount of correction (corneal laser sculpting) exceeds what is planned. Slight overcorrection can be temporary and may resolve itself in the first month following Lasik eye surgery. Patients can manage slight overcorrections by wearing glasses until their vision resolves. Some patients with overcorrection may need additional Lasik eye surgery 3 to 6 months following their first surgery.
Dry Eye many Lasik eye surgery patients may experience the feeling of grittiness in their eyes following surgery. This condition usually resolves itself in 3 to 6 months and may be helped by using lubricating eye drops. Patients using birth control pills and patients going through menopause may experience this condition more often. If dry eye continues beyond 6 months, your Lasik eye surgeon may recommend blocking your tear ducts with tiny silicon plugs to prevent tears from draining away too quickly.
Corneal abrasion a small percentage of Lasik eye surgery patients may develop a small corneal abrasion (scrape) caused by the microkeratome (instrument used to create corneal flap) used during surgery. This abrasion is generally not serious and will heal quickly. Your Lasik eye surgeon may temporarily place a thin bandage contact lens on your eye to promote healing. While your abrasion is healing, your vision will be blurry.
Night glare this annoying condition may not affect your vision clarity but patients may see halos or ghosting of images at night during the first month following surgery. Night glare generally improves in 3 months and often disappears within 6 months. Patients with large pupils and more severe vision impairment may be more prone to night glare.
Corneal flap complication this occurs when the corneal flap is too small, too thin or is an irregular shape. In some cases the corneal flap may shift slightly following surgery if a patient rubs their eyes during the first 6 hours after surgery. If the flap does shift, wrinkles can form causing distorted vision. A second procedure may be necessary to smooth out the wrinkles and improve vision.
Infection although this is the most feared complication of Lasik eye surgery patients, it is extremely rare. If your eye is going to become infected, chances are it will happen in the first 72 hours following surgery and will be treated with antibiotic eye drops. For this reason it is very important to avoid eye makeup, hot tubs and swimming pools for at least the first week following Lasik eye surgery.
The risks of Lasik eye surgery are low with an experienced Lasik eye surgeon but you need to be aware of possible complications prior to surgery. Your Lasik eye surgeon should freely discuss all possible complications of Lasik eye surgery prior to surgery. Do everything you can to put your eyes in the best possible hands.

LASIK Eye Surgery and the Benefits of the Procedure
LASIK (Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a common type of eye surgery that many are using to be able to decrease their dependency on glasses and contact lenses.
LASIK is a method of refractive surgery that is a regular procedure, often used for treating nearsightedness. Its popularity is due to the improvement of vision, without the major side effects that other eye surgery methods may produce.
With the eye being one of the most sensitive areas of the body, it might be somewhat surprising to learn that the LASIK procedure is relatively simple. In fact it’s not uncommon for those patients that have undergone the procedure to be working again the following day.
The eye is firstly washed out with a solution to numb the area. The next step is to hold the eyelids open using clamps. This will prevent blinking. After the solution begins to take effect, the surgeon will make an incision in the cornea. Once enough tissue is removed using the laser, the surgeon can then close where the incision is made, and the procedure is complete.
The benefits of LASIK eye surgery is there for all to see (excuse the pun!). Thousands of people have undergone the procedure, but for some the apprehension to go through with eye surgery may be attributed to the main benefits not being made clear, which are mainly two-fold:
1) The possibility to live life without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
2) An increase in the quality of vision.
The cost of having LASIK eye surgery performed can vary. The price depends on factors such as the equipment used for the surgery and also the testing carried out before the procedure. You may find that different providers will perform different levels of testing, so ensure that you research into different providers and find out what is included in the price. Of course you cannot put a price on your vision, but there is certainly no harm in discovering which provider offers the required features in the quoted price. One point that must be considered though is to find a surgeon that has experience with the procedure. Do not simply opt for the cheapest as they may not necessarily be the best.

Jet Lag, A Sickness Or Fear!
Jet lag is the worst fear of some air travelers. Many people try to avoid it by adopting different techniques, but most go in vain since there is no prevention. Fear and anxiety leads to this problem. We need to understand it and tackle the fear with planning.
Jet lag can be mainly defined as the symptoms caused due to fatigue and disorientation, resulting due to extensive air travel through different time zones. Other than this problem, you also face lack of sleep or broken sleep when you reach your destination. It is basically restlessness, something like the confusion a newborn child feels about the phenomena of day and night. It may take days for your body to get adjusted to the time zone. Sometimes the jet lag takes a severe toll when you are on a business tour, as you may not be fresh enough for the important presentations. If you are on a vacation, then it may also ruin your schedule. Another symptom you could experience is fuzziness and confusion and this symptom can cause problems while driving or walking on a road in an unfamiliar location. Jet lag also causes dehydration and this leads to weakness and makes you susceptible to illness.
There are different ways to tackle jet lag. The first way would be to reduce your anxiety and stress, while boarding and landing. You must always reach the airport before the boarding time and make sure you have dealt with all travelling issues to relax and this improves your mood. Stress often triggers jet lag symptoms and leads to tiredness, which indirectly causes weakness. If you do get ill or are already suffering from flu or cold, it would be advisable to postpone the trip and if at all it is unavoidable, then you must always carry along medication.
Some people have a preference time and route for travel. During air travel, you must always drink plenty of liquids such as fresh fruit juices or plain distilled water. By drinking fluids you can avoid dehydration, as it may lead to low blood pressure, nausea, dizziness and weakness. If these symptoms continue, then it may lead to heat stroke, which can lead to heart attack, coma, seizure or even death due to lack of oxygen in the blood. The symptoms of dehydration are dry skin, fatigue and thirst. Prevention is better than cure and so, you must always drink a lot of fluids.
Some people also prefer sleeping to avoid jet lag, but if you cant sleep naturally and have to take medication to induce sleep then it is advisable to consult a doctor prior to air travel. You can also try earplugs, blindfolds and music or blow up pillows to relax, during the flight. In short you must try all possible ways to relax while in-flight.
You can combat jet lag even while flying, by doing some simple exercises like walking around the cabin or holding your travel bag in a ninety degree position and practicing some biceps curls. You can also perform some simple stretch exercises while you are seated or even relax by reading a book. But while doing these, see to it that you dont disturb your co-passengers. You need to respect their comfort too.

Inner Awareness
We are all pelted with problems. Honestly, it should not even bother or even hinder us to becoming all we ought to be. Aspirations as kids should continue to live within us, even though it would be short-lived or as long as we could hold on to the dream. They say you cannot teach an old dog new tricks or can you?
If you are like me, there are so many things you want to do with your life and so little time to do it, even going about your normal daily tasks during the day, seems to take forever. Therefore, I would ask you to delve deep inside yourself to find the answer.
Concentrate and take notice of your Inner Awareness
Inner-Awareness, what does it mean? Well, lets us look at each word individually.
Inner means inside, within the essence of our being on some spiritual level.
Awareness means one’s perception of reality from one plane or dimension to another.
Therefore, it could be said that Inner-Awareness is an attitude, an understanding of ones inner consciousness. An understanding of how one perceives themselves. A true understanding of how you really feel and why you act in the way you do.
Every person in this world has access to their inner awareness. We all live in a very materialistic world that is run by logic and scientific achievement and discovery. For something to be real, you must perceive it with your physical senses. If youre inner awareness has not been developed and fine-tuned, then you may find many activities and energies around have no conscious awareness for you, so you will be out of touch with your inner self.
Your goal is to create a balance between the physical senses and the inner senses. There are two energies muscular and feminine. A masculine energy is more aggressive, a logical action to take, which results in a creation of something in the physical world. A feminine energy is a more flowing and spontaneous energy that relates more to the spiritual essence of our being. Inherent within all beings are both energies. When they work together, they create a harmonic balance.
A key element in developing your inner awarenesss is to trust an initial response, answer or insight you receive from yourself. For example, how many times have you had an intuitive insight to do something, which made no logical sense at all?
Most of us at sometime, have let our logical mind talk us out of things and then we could kick ourselves later because we missed an opportunity. If your mind is busy, and you are thinking about all the problems in your life and worrying about tomorrow, you could miss some important information or insights that will help you in life. Another thing you may possibly do is not trust your inner self when making a key decision in your life, but you will trust someone else to make the decision for you.
When you use your inner awareness, you receive guidance through your life, and who knows you best? You do, so why not take notice of it.
To receive inner guidance is to trust in yourself and to be open to the incredible and infinite possibilities of the adventures of life that present themselves to you in your lifetime.
I believe when you are spontaneous, you allow your inner awareness to come out and play, that is when you are truly channeling from within. You can tell when you are around a person in this state because they make you feel happy inside. In todays society we are taught that it is not proper to be spontaneous, that you should act in a certain way and follow certain rules. I believe this subconscious programming is detrimental to your inner health. I feel you should go with your creative flow and be who you are and not worry if other people accept you or not. No matter how nice you try to be or courteous with others there will always be someone who will be disturbed about who you are, and the way you are behaving. This is not a bad thing in itself, because when you see something in another you do not like, that person is mirroring something inside of you that you wish to change.
So lighten up, try to be yourself. With so much happening around us there seems to be no room for even considering the possibility of a light at the end of the tunnel. We can still see it as something positive without undergoing so much scrutiny. Moreover, if it is a train at the end of the tunnel, take it for a ride, and see what makes the world go round!
If history has taught us one thing, it is the life that we have gone through. There’s always the easy way and the right way when it comes to deciding what goes with which shoes, or purse, shirt and whatnot. It doesn’t take a genius to see yourself as someone unique, or else we’ll all be equally the same in everything we do. Variety brings in very interesting and exciting questions to be experimented with. Have you, or is there something more you want to do? Discontentment in every aspect can be dangerous in large doses, but in small amounts you will be able to see and do stuff you could never imagine doing.
What motivates you? It’s an answer you have to find out for yourself. There are so many things that can make everyone happy, but to choose one of the many may be the hardest part. It’s not as if you can’t have one serving of your favorite food in a buffet and that’s it. Just try it piece by piece.
So, what really makes you tick?
You can be just about anything you always wanted to be, but to realize that attaining something that may seem very difficult is already giving up before you even start that journey. Always remember, that understand and believing in your own self-awareness is not just about the physical or philosophical change you have to undergo, but it’s something that you really want to believe in and trust.

Information On Womens Hair Loss
Introduction
A popular misconception is that only men suffer from hair loss. A related fallacy is that only a very small percentage of women experience hair loss. Both assertions are not true; it is estimated that six out of ten women will undergo some degree of hair loss. This process is even more devastating for women because it seems that it is not as prevalent (as hair loss in men) and a womans beauty is closely tied in with lustrous, full-looking hair.
Probably one of the most traumatic experiences that can affect a woman is losing her hair. Baldness occurs when hairs begin to fall out (which is normal- about 100-150 per day), but do not grow back. Science is still tackling with exact reasons for the start of the process, but we know that genetic predisposition, aging, and diet are closely (if not directly) related.
Reasons for Hair Loss
Genetic hair loss and increased shedding (chronic telogen effluvium) is responsible for the majority of hair loss grievances by women (up to 95% before menopause). Unlike men, women are more likely to experience thinning from behind the front hairline to the crown.
There are two types of hair loss: telogen effluvium and anagen effluvium. The latter is due to medications or processes such as chemotherapy. The former is due to an abnormal number of hair follicles being in the resting stage. The following are reasons for telogen effluvium:
- Stress on the body due to surgery, illness, anemia, rapid change in weight, etc.
- Stress on the mind due to mental illness, death, depression, etc.
- Thyroid abnormalities
- Medications such as high doses of Vitamin A, blood pressure pills, gout medications, etc.
- Hormonal causes such as birth control pills, pregnancy, and menopause
The following could be reasons for temporary hair loss:
- Too little protein or iron in the diet
- Alopecia areata
- Traumatic stress or illness
- Childbirth
- Ringworm
When these above causes are remedied, a return of normal hair growth will follow.
Diet
A good, healthy, and well-balanced diet contributes to voluminous hair. Large amounts of vitamin A should be avoided. Protein and iron rich foods will contribute to healthy hair. Vegetarians and Vegans often may be targets for hair loss because of their modified diets. Protein, iron, and zinc supplements should be ingested on a daily basis if you are a vegan or vegetarian.
Physical and Emotional Stress
Undergoing severe illness and emotional stress can contribute to hair loss. The body begins to break down and normal functioning is altered. The body knows that hair production is not vital to survival, so it will devote its energies elsewhere and in effect create hair loss. In most cases there is a three month delay between an event and the advent of hair loss. It may take up to three months for hair to grow back after the resolution of a traumatic event.
Health conditions such as anemia, low blood count, and thyroid abnormalities attribute to hair loss. These conditions can be combated and can easily be indicated by a blood test.
Hormonal Change
Hormonal changes can cause hair loss in women. Pregnancy and the discontinuation of birth control pills can cause hair loss. When a woman is pregnant their levels of the hormone progesterone becomes high and causes hair to be in a dormant state. When hormone levels re-balance, the woman will experience re-growth of the hair. Ironically, when a woman undergoes restoration, she will see a great deal of hair falling out. This is the dormant hair being replaced by healthier, fuller hair.
Remedies
- A well balanced diet including foods high in protein and iron
- Regular doctor check ups
- Counseling for stress (especially after a traumatic event)
- Hair weaves, changing hair style, and or wigs.
- Hair transplants
- Minoxidil (Rogaine)
The good news is that if you are experiencing hair loss, most likely the cause can be remedied. It is up to each woman to take care of herself and be proactive to fight hair loss. Because it takes some time to overcome and re-grow hair after many of the instances of hair loss, finding a great looking wig is suggested, so that you will not experience a lack of confidence and cause more stress (which is bad for the hair) while your hair is growing back.

Hurricane Aftermath Health & Safety Tips
With the record-setting hurricane season of 2005, it is never too soon to begin preparing for the 2006 season, which has been predicted to have an above average number of hurricanes.
EHA has over 25 years of experience with mold related matters and can assist you with assessment of the property and your health concerns.
EHAs teams of qualified professionals are ready to respond immediately with offices in West Palm Beach and Tampa Bay, Florida.
Please feel free to contact us at 561-965-0250 in West Palm Beach, 813-236-8220 in Tampa Bay or via our corporate offices in Baltimore at 800-969-1441.
As public health consultants, our first concern is for the health and safety of the people who suffer through these unfortunate events. The potential for disease outbreaks and serious injury loom far after the threat of a major hurricane. As such, people affected by major weather events of catastrophic size must first be prepared to deal with the following conditions so critical to human survival including food, water and shelter.
* Infectious diseases and chemical exposure Diseases such as typhoid and cholera are associated with the consumption of contaminated food and water supplies due to flooding of sewers and sewage systems. Viral and parasitic diseases such as Hepatitis A and Cryptosporidiosis can also become major threats to the publics health. Contaminated flood waters may also harbor toxic chemicals including pesticides and petroleum by-products.
* CO- Carbon Monoxide intoxication Precautions should be taken to ensure that adequate ventilation exists whenever running any gasoline powered engine such as, large pumps, generators or vehicles. Last year there were deaths associated with carbon monoxide intoxication in Florida.
* Safe food and water Often the most critical two items essential to survival, safe food and water are often in short supply during major catastrophes. Food that has not been properly refrigerated should not be consumed. Whenever possible, drink only boiled or bottled water. If boiling water is not practical, authorities recommend the use of chlorine bleach at a concentration of18 teaspoon per gallon of water, but be advised that some pathogenic organisms are resistant to this chemical treatment.
* Mosquito transmitted diseases Diseases such as Encephalitis and West Nile Virus can be of serious concern. Since most hurricanes occur during the summer months, when temperatures can be sweltering, the best line of defense is a mosquito repellant containing DEET or Picariin.
Long after a hurricane has passed, after basic survival has been assured and upon return to your property, the threat of mold looms. For this reason, we’ve listed our Emergency Prevention of Mold Damage & Property Damage recommendations below to help provide you with the first steps you should take to limit mold damage. More information about hurricane-related mold damage and safety tips is available at http:www.ehagroup.commoldhurricane.asp.

Human Growth Hormone
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) or Somatotrophin is a protein which helps in growth and cell production in animals and humans. It is the hormone which is made naturally in the pituitary glands of humans. The pituitary gland is deep inside the brain just behind the eye. The hormone is made in the body throughout a persons life but the development of this hormone is more when the person is young. The human growth Hormone is a microscopic protein substance and is found secreted in short pulses after the exercise and during first hours of sleep. The hormone plays a very essential role in adult metabolism and growth of children.
The growth hormone as it indicates helps in th growth of the human body, it stimulates the liver and other tissues which in turn stimulates the growth of bone. The process of growing continues till the time when it has to i.e till the time a person reaches adult height. But the role of the growth hormone does not ends, then there will be normal level of human growth hormone that will maintain the balance throughout lifetime. Another function of Human Growth hormone is to control protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and stimulates the growth of muscle tissue in cell reproduction. our lifestyle, diet, exercise, adequate sleep, stress levels will have great impact on the growth hormone and its capacity to function properly.
Normal growth and proper function will always keep the body fit but there are condition when there is excessive growth of this hormone or deficiency, both hampers the proper functioning of the body along with some adverse effects. If the level of HGH is increased in the body it results in Giantism in children where the growth is rapid and in continuation. Whereas in adults it results in Acromegaly, a disease in which the bones of the jaws, fingers and toes thickens which exerts presure on nerves, insulin resistance or a person can suffer from a rare form of type2 diabetes, this is not all a persom with increased growth hormone can have weak muscles and reduced sexual function. This condition is treated with medication which obstructs the release of human growth hormone.
When there is deficiency of growth hormone it results in stunted growth in children whereas the effects are mild in grown ups. They will experience muscle weakness, fatigue or weariness and inability to metabolize the fat. The deficiency of growth hormone can be treated with the supplements of human growth hormone. But in more sereve conditions the solution lies in surgery.
There are HGH injections ,HGH oral sprays and HGH supplements which are meant to fulfull the requirement of human growth hormone when the body is not able to produce it naturally. The growth hormone are said to be working as anti aging process, but the more advanced studies reveal that the evidence are inconclusive to prove that HGH reverse the process of aging. Prolong use or regular application of growth hormone will definitely have many side effects and long lasing ill effects on health.
